Cats with Fever & Cold: Symptoms & Care Guide
Cats, much like us humans, tend to seek cooler spots when they have a cold and a fever.
When we humans have a fever, our body temperature rises, prompting us to seek external ways to cool down. Cats experience the same thing. A cat that usually prefers cozy spots like sofas or beds might suddenly opt for lying on the floor, or it might prefer darker, cooler areas. If you notice its nose feeling dry and hot, these could be signs that it's suffering from a fever.
After a cat has a cold and fever, it may become listless and more inclined to sleep.
Fevers can leave both humans and animals feeling weak. Cats, being creatures that love to nap, might appear more exhausted than usual, showing little interest in food or play, and breathing might become rapid. Gently touch its ears and abdomen; if they feel warmer than usual, it might indicate a fever. Have you, as a caring pet owner, ever noticed that your cat's ears are always cool, even on the hottest of days? Just like in humans, the ears are one of the cooler parts of the body.
Less urine output is another significant sign of a cat with a cold and fever.
With reduced water intake, the cat's urine output decreases. If your cat is not using the litter box frequently and seems listless, it's time to take its temperature. Observe its limbs, nose, lips, and tongue. If its limbs are cold, and the nose, lips, and tongue appear pale, it could be suffering from hypothermia.
It's important to note that hypothermia in cats, just like in humans, is a serious condition. If the cat's body temperature falls below the normal range, it indicates that the body's functions are declining. A temperature below 35 degrees Celsius is considered very serious. So, act quickly to measure its temperature, and if it's confirmed, don't hesitate to take your cat to the vet immediately!
