Common Signs of Fever in Kitten: Quick Guide

Cats, as animals, can experience fevers quite normally. So, how can you tell if your feline friend has a fever? It's actually not too difficult. When cats have a fever, they exhibit changes in behavior similar to humans, including a runny nose.

I often get asked, "What should I do if my cat has a fever? Can I give it fever medicine?" Rest assured, a fever in cats is not a severe or incurable condition. With proper care and treatment, your cat can recover quickly. Signs of a cat with a fever include a temperature over 40 degrees Celsius, with the usually cool tips of their tail and ears feeling warm, and they may become exhausted, collapsing on a cold floor.

What Are the Symptoms of a Fever in Puppies?

Just like humans, when we have a fever, we seek ways to cool down. Cats are no different; if your cat, who usually prefers cozy spots like sofas or beds, suddenly starts sleeping on the ground, or if it prefers dimly lit, cool areas, or if its nose is dry and hot, these could be signs of a fever. It's time to measure its temperature.

Cats have a slightly higher normal body temperature than humans, typically ranging from 38 to 39 degrees Celsius. The most accurate way to measure a cat's temperature is at the rectum, but for athome measurements, you can use the base of the cat's hind leg. If the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, it's crucial to take your cat to the vet immediately.

Cats with a fever need to be cooled down. You can use physical methods to lower their temperature, such as applying special ice packs or towels to their feverish areas. These areas are usually the belly, paw pads, and armpits. Additionally, you can use medical alcohol to wipe the paw pads to help cool down the cat, but be cautious if your cat has a tendency to scratch, as you want to avoid alcohol poisoning. Ensure the alcohol has dried and the cat cannot reach it before wiping it clean.

For puppies with a mild fever, you can gently wipe their paw pads, belly, and ears with alcohol, and use ice packs for cold compresses. Make sure they drink plenty of water. However, if the fever is severe, it's best to take the puppy to a veterinary hospital to determine the cause and follow the doctor's advice for treatment. Never give a puppy human fever medicine without consulting a vet, as it can be fatal to the kitten.
