The dog is coughing with a crackling sound

1. Overexcitement or Excitement

When a dog becomes overly excited about something, it may sometimes start to cough and even cry out. This is because the pressure on the trachea can cause the dog to involuntarily emit a crackling sound similar to a cough. Additionally, due to the irritation of the trachea, the dog may also experience a runny nose. For instance, when you come home after a long absence, your dog might exhibit this behavior, with tears streaming down its face.

2. Foreign Object Stuck in the Throat

If a dog swallows something too quickly, such as a bone or other foreign object, it can become stuck in the throat, leading to coughing and yellowish discharge. These symptoms are the dog's way of protecting itself. If the dog continues to cough without improvement, it's best for the owner to take the pet to a veterinary hospital to remove the foreign object from the throat to prevent it from causing the dog to suffocate.

3. Respiratory Infection

If a puppy consistently coughs with a crackling sound and also has yellowish discharge, it may be due to a respiratory infection. In such cases, the dog may also exhibit symptoms like wheezing. At this point, the owner can start giving the dog some antiinflammatory medication, such as amoxicillin powder, or add antiinflammatory drugs like lysine to the dog's food. These additions can effectively boost the dog's immunity, thereby strengthening its ability to heal itself.

4. Canine Distemper

If a dog is coughing with a crackling sound and has yellowish discharge, it may be an early sign of canine distemper. This indicates that there is inflammation in the dog's body, and the condition is spreading. Given that dogs are not very large in size, it's crucial to take the dog to a veterinary hospital for treatment as soon as possible. If the dog has already developed diarrhea, it's essential to administer antibiotics promptly.

Warm Reminders:

If you're unsure about the cause of your dog's crackling cough, it's best to take the pet to a veterinary hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible to avoid missing the best treatment window.
