Reasons for Baby Rabbits Suffering from Cold

1. The primary cause of baby rabbits experiencing cold is often due to the owner's failure to accurately note the rabbits' expected breeding date. This can lead to either the mother rabbit giving birth prematurely or the owner not preparing the birthing box in time. As a result, the newborns are born into a cold environment, making them susceptible to hypothermia.

2. Another reason is the mother rabbit's weak maternal instincts. If she does not give birth in the provided birthing box, and instead does so outdoors in the cold, the newborns will be at risk of freezing immediately after birth.

3. Insufficient milk production in the mother rabbit can lead to the baby rabbits constantly suckling, known as "milking," which causes them to follow the mother out of the box. Exposed to the colder climate outside, this can result in frostbite.

However, regardless of the cause of the cold, if the baby rabbit's heart is still beating, the owner must act promptly. Immediate first aid is crucial for any frostbitten baby rabbits.

First Aid for Frostbitten Baby Rabbits

1. Warm Water Rescue Method

Begin by filling a basin with water at a comfortable temperature of around 40°C. Submerge the frostbitten baby rabbit in the water, ensuring the nostrils are above the surface to prevent drowning. Gently hold the rabbit's head and move it in the water for about 10 to 20 minutes. Once the rabbit starts to show slight movements, remove it from the water, dry it thoroughly, and wrap it in soft cotton. Place the rabbit back in the prepared birthing box.

2. Towel Wrapping for Warming

Wrap the frostbitten baby rabbit in a clean, soft towel, leaving the head exposed. Place the wrapped rabbit in a warm area, such as near a fireplace or on top of a hot water bottle. Gently flip the rabbit occasionally until it regains consciousness.

3. Body Heat Method

Place the frostbitten rabbit in a slightly larger group of rabbits, and cover it with soft towels or cloth, leaving only the hindquarters exposed. Do not cover too thickly to avoid suffocation. After about 2 to 3 hours, the frostbitten rabbit should gradually wake up.

Tip from Oxygen Pet Doctor: Preventing frostbite in rabbits is possible. If a rabbit is pregnant, the owner must accurately calculate and remember the expected breeding date, preparing the birthing box in advance. During the birthing process, the owner should be present throughout to ensure the baby rabbits receive colostrum promptly and to prevent weak mother rabbits from harming their offspring.
