Characteristics of the Rhodesian Ridgeback: A Closer Look

Overall Appearance: The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a robust and agile breed, known for its swift gait. They possess an air of nobility and are fiercely loyal to their owners, though they tend to maintain a respectful distance from strangers.

Size, Proportions, and Structure: This breed stands at approximately 63.5 to 68.6 centimeters tall and weighs around 38.56 kilograms. Females are slightly smaller, reaching 61.0 to 66.0 centimeters in height and weighing about 31.75 kilograms.

The head is of moderate length, with a flat frontal bone that sits between the eyes, leading to the nose. The eyes are round and expressive, with a color that complements the coat. The ears are close to the head, sometimes standing up, forming a circle around the base of the ear. The lower jaw is long, deep, and strong, with a black or brown nose. A black nose typically matches black eyes, while a brown nose is paired with amber eyes.

The chest is moderately expanded but not rounded, ensuring that it does not hinder their swift running. The back is strong and muscular, with a slightly arched waist. The tail is thick at the base and tapers to a point, neither too high nor too low. It can curve slightly upwards but must not curl.

Forelimbs: The shoulders are sloping, with welldeveloped muscles for rapid movement. The elbows are close to the body, and the forelegs are straight and powerful, with strong bones. The toes are compact and arched, with round, firm pads that are elastic and covered in fur for protection. The dewclaws can be removed.

Hindlimbs: The hind legs are muscular, with low hocks.

Coat: The coat is short, dense, and lustrous.

Color: The color ranges from light to red wheaten, with a white spot on the chest, abdomen, and toes, but excessive white is not desirable.

The Ridge: A distinctive feature of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the ridge along its back, formed by hair growing in the opposite direction. The spine is radiating and clear, gradually thinning. It starts behind the shoulders and extends between the two prominent points at the base of the tail, with the lower edge of the prominent points exceeding the ridge line by onethird.

Disqualifications: Lack of a ridge. Severe defects: More than two prominent points.

Stride: The Rhodesian Ridgeback moves with a smooth, level back, taking long, confident strides. Their balanced propulsion from front to back showcases a blend of power and grace. Their running gait demonstrates both speed and endurance.

They are a highly enduranceoriented hunting dog, making them an exceptional choice for the field.
