It's quite common for certain dog breeds to be more susceptible to ear canal issues. These include breeds with large ears or pendulous ears such as Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Pekingese, Basset Hounds, Golden Retrievers, and Dachshunds.

Here are four common ear diseases that dogs may face:

Canine External Otitis:

Summer is a peak season for external otitis, often triggered by bacterial infections and allergic dermatitis. Other factors like parasites biting, or longterm earwax buildup and moisture can also lead to infections in a dog's outer ear.

Canine Internal Otitis:

Internal otitis in dogs is primarily caused by inflammation in the middle ear, which can result in hearing loss or balance disorders.

Canine Ear Fungus:

Ear fungus in dogs is commonly due to moisture, inadequate cleaning, and scratching. It often leads to thickening and reddening of the ear canal.

Canine Ear Mites:

Ear mites are tiny parasites that live on the surface of the skin and in the external ear canal. They feed on lymph fluid and skin cells, surviving on tissue debris and remnants. If left untreated, they can cause inflammation and hearing loss in the ear canal. Dogs with ear mites may also experience ears that become smelly and烂.

It's crucial for dogs with ear canal diseases to be diagnosed and treated by a professional veterinarian. Never attempt to treat your dog's ear issues with human medications, as they may not be suitable for your pet's pH levels and could harm their ear canal and overall health.

How can we prevent ear diseases in dogs?

Regularly maintain your dog's ear hygiene and keep them dry, especially during baths to prevent water from accumulating in the ears. Ensure that the fur around the ear canal and outer ear is not too dense, particularly for breeds with large ears, especially during the summer months. Schedule regular checkups and seek medical attention promptly if any abnormalities are detected.
