Section 1: Signs of a Dog's Estrus Period

When a dog enters her estrus period, commonly referred to as "heat," her vulva becomes swollen and she experiences a small amount of red discharge. Although the discharge is not substantial, it can still lead to messes both on the dog and in your home. It is advisable to use a doggy diaper during this time to keep her and your living space clean. Moreover, during the estrus period, a dog's chances of mating and getting pregnant are higher, so a doggy diaper can effectively prevent accidental breeding with male dogs. Additionally, a dog's mood and physiology can be affected during this time, with the following specific impacts:

Similar to human females during their menstrual cycle, a dog in heat may exhibit signs of restlessness, irritability, and impulsive behavior. The primary difference is that dogs in heat also experience estrus, which humans do not. It can be considered that a dog's heat is a manifestation of her estrus cycle, which occurs twice a year, typically in spring and autumn, lasting around 11 to 14 days each time.

Section 2: The Necessity of Using a Doggy Diaper During Estrus

It is highly recommended to use a doggy diaper during a dog's estrus period, especially when taking her outside. This is because a dog in heat has the ability to become pregnant, and her fertility rate is relatively high during this time. Wearing a doggy diaper can help prevent unwanted attention from male dogs and reduce the risk of infection due to exposure of her vulva.

In the absence of a doggy diaper, you can use children's triangle underwear as an alternative. Simply cut a small hole in the back of the underwear to allow the dog's tail to pass through, and place a sanitary pad inside. This makeshift doggy diaper will provide the necessary protection.

Dr. Oxygen Pet Tips: If you wish to avoid your dog's estrus period and have no intention of breeding her, consider having her spayed at around 6 months of age. After spaying, your dog will no longer experience her heat cycles.
