When pet owners engage in close interactions with their dogs and detect an unpleasant smell coming from their pets' ears, it's important not to rush to judgment. This could be a warning sign of an ear canal health issue! So, what causes a dog's ears to smell bad, and what medications can help? Today, we're here to uncover the answers!

Part 1: The Culprits Behind a Dog's Smelly Ears

To tackle the issue of a smelly dog ear, it's crucial to understand its root causes. Common reasons for a dog's ears to smell unpleasant include ear mites, bacterial or fungal otitis externa, allergic reactions, and earwax buildup. If left untreated, these issues can escalate to more severe problems such as otitis media or internal otitis, potentially affecting hearing.

Conditions that often lead to a noticeable odor include ear mites, Malassezia infections, and earwax accumulation, which can often be managed at home. However, if a dog's ears are red and swollen, or if there's discharge, it might indicate otitis media, and a prompt veterinary visit is necessary.

Part 2: How to Tackle a Dog's Smelly Ears

1. Cleaning is Key

If your dog's ears simply have an odor accompanied by excessive earwax.

Before considering any medications, it's advisable to clean your dog's ears first. For breeds with dense ear hair like Poodles and Bichon Frises, ear hair should be plucked first, followed by the use of petspecific ear cleaning solutions to remove earwax and other debris, reducing the ear odor.

Correct ear cleaning steps:

① Gently drop a small amount of ear cleaning solution into your dog's ear, massage the base of the ear for 12 minutes;

② Allow your dog to shake its head to expel the cleaning solution and earwax from the ear canal;

③ Wipe the outer ear with a clean tissue or cotton swab to remove any earwax that has been shaken out.

Attention: When cleaning your dog's ears with a cotton swab, be gentle and avoid pushing too deep to prevent damaging the eardrum or pushing earwax further into the ear canal, which can lead to ear canal inflammation.

2. Adjusting Diet

Feeding your dog high amounts of sugary or fatty foods can lead to increased oil secretion in the ear canals, causing earwax to become wet and fostering bacterial growth, which can produce an odor.

To avoid ear odor caused by diet, consider the following adjustments:

(1)Choose lowfat, easily digestible foods to reduce oil secretion in the ear canals.

(2)Increase the intake of antioxidantrich foods like vegetables and fruits to boost your dog's immune system.

(3)Avoid feeding your dog foods that can trigger allergies, such as milk, eggs, and seafood.

3. Medication

If daily cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, it may be due to ear mites, Malassezia infections, or otitis, which require veterinary examination to determine the exact cause.

Based on the specific situation, the following medications can be considered:

• Ear mites: Erfafen (pet ear cleaning solution) + Xin'er Ning (miconazole nitrate ointment) + deworming medication (e.g., selamectin, pyriproxyfen moxidectin, and afuralan).

• Malassezia infection: Erfafen cleaning solution + CombiVit (vitamin B complex solution) + miconazole nitrate ear drops.

• External otitis/mild otitis media: Erfafen cleaning solution + Erdiri (fluoroquinolone metronidazole ear drops) + Esuda (cefadroxil tablets).

Prevention is often more important than treatment for a dog's ear issues. It's recommended to regularly check your dog's ears and clean them promptly if you notice an odor or excessive discharge.

For more severe conditions like otitis media, internal otitis, ear tumors, growths, or other issues, always follow the veterinarian's guidance for treatment to avoid more severe consequences.
