Raising a Young Scottish Shepherd Dog: A Comprehensive Guide

1. Scottish Shepherd puppies begin teething around three weeks of age. During this crucial period, in addition to nursing on their mother's milk, it's important to introduce a small amount of weaning food. Proper weaning is essential for their growth, and it's vital to prevent malnutrition. There are specialized weaning puppy foods available on the market, or you can soften puppy kibble with boiling water or puppy milk to create a more palatable and nutritious meal.

2. The amount of food each weaning puppy needs can vary, but feeding them 4 to 6 times a day is generally ideal. The food should be finely ground for easier digestion.

3. When purchasing a puppy from a pet store, it's best to consult with a professional beforehand to understand the specific feeding schedule and types of food suitable for the puppy.

4. Gradually increase the amount of weaning food, and around 50 days after birth, the puppy should be fully weaned.

5. To prepare the puppy food, soak dry kibble in plenty of warm water until it's soft. Use a small spoon to crush the kibble and add some kibble powder to supplement calcium. Mix gently to form a doughlike consistency for a delicious and nutritious weaning meal.

6. By the time the puppy is two months old, most of their milk teeth should have grown in. Begin to transition to puppy formula by gradually introducing a small amount of kibble into the weaning food, feeding 3 to 4 times a day. Gradually increase the kibble ratio until it replaces the weaning food entirely. Similarly, reduce the number of milk feedings, aiming to reduce the daily feeding frequency by 2 to 3 times by the puppy's sixth month.

7. If the mother dog lacks milk, consider purchasing a specialized puppy milk formula or goat's milk to feed the puppy. However, ensure that the formula is cooled before serving and remember that Scottish Shepherd puppies are lactose intolerant, so avoid giving them cow's milk.

8. Wait 45 days before taking the puppy for vaccinations and deworming.
