Dog Intestinal Spasm Symptoms:

Dog intestinal spasm is a condition caused by rapid accumulation of food, liquid, or gas in the stomach, leading to excessive stomach distension. It commonly affects large dogs and often occurs after intense exercise, resulting in stomach torsion or intestinal twisting, which can block the stomach outlet.

This condition is characterized by vomiting and the disappearance of intestinal peristalsis. The frequency and nature of vomiting can vary depending on the location of the blockage, with more severe vomiting occurring closer to the top of the stomach. Severe vomiting can lead to noticeable dehydration symptoms, causing the skin to lose elasticity and mucous membranes to dry out. When a rear intestinal obstruction occurs, the accumulation of gas in the intestines can lead to an enlarged abdomen, with tenderness upon palpation. Secondary peritonitis may present with progressive abdominal pain, fever, weakened vital signs, and sometimes shock.

It can be challenging to diagnose intestinal obstructions caused by linear or weblike structures. However, in cases of intussusception or volvulus, a palpable mass can often be felt, and the dog may exhibit localized tenderness.

Food residue that ferments and produces gas cannot be expelled, causing the stomach to enlarge. If left untreated, the dog can quickly go into shock. Additionally, the expanded stomach can compress the respiratory system, leading to death within a few hours in severe cases.

The most prominent symptom is diarrhea and loose stools; dog intestinal spasm can trigger a sense of urgent defecation. Some dogs may also experience constipation, difficulty defecating, or a decrease in bowel movements. In more severe cases, dogs may alternate between diarrhea and constipation.
