Ringworm in cats is one of the most common skin diseases they can contract, particularly in multicat households. If one cat falls ill with ringworm, it can spread rapidly to others, and in some cases, even to their human companions. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial. But how can you tell if your cat has ringworm? Today, we'll explore some simple methods to help you identify this condition.

1. Look Out for the Signs

Most cases of ringworm in cats are caused by Microsporum canis. Look for these telltale symptoms:

● Your cat may have one or more patches of hair loss, which typically appear as circular or elliptical, with a clear distinction from the surrounding skin.

● The hair around the bald patches will often be dry and brittle, prone to falling out or breaking.

● You might notice gray or white scales and redness on the affected areas.

● In severe cases, there may be itching, scabbing, and ulcers.

2. The Wood's Lamp Test

The Wood's lamp is a tool that emits a narrow spectrum of ultraviolet light, making it a quick and effective way to diagnose ringworm. Under the lamp, the metabolic products of Microsporum canis often glow green. Remember to ensure that no medication is applied to the cat's skin and that the environment is dimly lit for the test.

It's important to note that not all fungi will produce this reaction, so a lack of fluorescence does not necessarily rule out ringworm.

3. Skin Scraping Examination

While observing symptoms and using the Wood's lamp are initial steps, for a more precise diagnosis, it's advisable to visit a veterinary clinic for a skin scraping test.

The vet will take a sample of the infected skin and examine it under a microscope. The presence of fungal hyphae or spores confirms a diagnosis of ringworm.

4. Fungal Culture

This is the most accurate method for diagnosing fungal infections. The vet will take samples from the affected skin, blood, or other tissues and culture them. After a period of incubation, the vet will examine the fungi under a microscope to identify their species and select the appropriate antifungal medications for your cat.

If your cat is diagnosed with ringworm, it's essential to start treatment promptly.

✅ Common topical treatments include Daktarin (ketоконазол cream), Pipette (terbinafine hydrochloride spray), and clotrimazole cream, which are suitable for smaller areas of infection.

✅ For more extensive infections, consider combining topical treatments with medicated baths, such as a 0.2% econazole solution or 24% lime sulfur solution, applied once or twice a week.

✅ For stubborn or severe cases, oral itraconazole may be prescribed, taken once daily at a dosage of 510mg/kg. However, this medication can be hard on the liver, so it's not recommended for kittens under 3 months, pregnant cats, or cats with compromised liver function.

During treatment, remember to regularly disinfect your cat's living environment to maintain a dry and clean space. Additionally, supplementing your cat's diet with vitamins, proteins, and essential fatty acids can aid in skin repair.
