Identifying the Symptoms
Firstly, it's important to note that a healthy dog's eyes should be clear and bright, with only a small amount of transparent or pale yellow mucus. If you notice a substantial amount of yellow or green puslike discharge around your dog's eyes, it may indicate an eye infection or other issues. Additionally, keep an eye out for these symptoms:
Repeatedly rubbing the eyes with paws
Redness and swelling around the eyes
Frequent blinking or squinting
Excessive tearing
Understanding the Sources of Purulent Eye Discharge
To tackle the issue of purulent eye discharge in your puppy, it's crucial to understand its origins. Puppies often experience purulent eye discharge due to several factors:
Bacterial Infection: Dogs can develop eye infections due to injuries, mechanical irritation, or allergies. Common conditions include conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis, which can cause redness, tearing, and an increase in mucus, resulting in white, yellow, or greenish puslike discharge.
Viruses: Viral infections are also common causes of eye inflammation and purulent discharge, such as canine distemper and canine infectious hepatitis. Canine distemper may present with symptoms like recurrent fever, runny nose, and cough, while canine infectious hepatitis often includes symptoms like runny nose, cloudy cornea, and vomiting.
Eye Structure Issues: Dogs with ectropion, entropion, or eyelashes that grow inward may also experience purulent eye discharge.

What to Do When Your Puppy Has Purulent Eye Discharge?
1. Clean the Eyes
When you notice purulent discharge in your puppy's eyes, the first step is to maintain eye hygiene. Gently clean the eyes with warm water or physiological saline to remove the puslike discharge.
