Effective Cough Remedies for Dogs: Best止咳 Medications
Recently, many new parents have been leaving messages on the platform, asking what medication to give their dogs for coughing. Hold your horses for a moment. Dogs can cough for a variety of reasons. If it's just a seasonal change or if they're coughing a couple of times after a vigorous workout, there's usually no need to worry. Just ensure your furry friend gets plenty of rest, stays warm, and avoids prolonged stays in airconditioned rooms.
What should you do if your dog's coughing persists?
Here are some possible causes of persistent coughing in dogs:
Heatstroke: Mild coughing, excessive eye boogers, red conjunctivae, but the dog remains in good spirits and eats well.
Cold: Mild coughing, runny nose, and if the coughing lasts more than three days, the dog is still in good spirits and eating well.
Kennel Cough: Varying degrees of coughing, with some dogs experiencing fever and decreased appetite. This is more common in puppies and typically lasts between 3 to 7 days.
Canine Distemper/Pneumonia/Brachitis: Coughing, runny nose, fever, poor appetite, and coughing for about a week. Chronic bronchitis and pneumonia can lead to longterm coughing.
Which cough medicine is best for dogs?
1. For Puppies:
✔Bibai Pipa Paste: Available at most pharmacies, it has simple ingredients and is safe for puppies, although the effect may be slower.
✔Cough Syrup: Offers slightly better cough relief, but the cough may return a few hours after consumption.
✔Guogen: A traditional Chinese medicine with good coughrelieving effects, suitable for canine pneumonia and bronchitis, and also available at most pharmacies.
Keep in mind that most cough medicines can only suppress and alleviate the symptoms. To completely resolve your dog's cough, you may need to take antibiotics concurrently. For puppies, we recommend Kenjia (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium), a petspecific broadspectrum antibiotic that effectively combats respiratory diseases caused by bacterial infections. It has relatively safe ingredients and minimal side effects.
2. For Adult Dogs:
Dry Cough: Kawaning (Qingwen Baidu Tablet)
Dry coughs are usually caused by heatstroke in dogs, often accompanied by halitosis, excessive eye boogers, and red conjunctivae. Qingwen Baidu Tablet contains traditional Chinese herbs like Rehmannia, Water Buffalo Horn, and Coptis, which have the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying.
Wet Cough: Qingwen Baidu Tablet + Guogen + Fenodu (Doxycycline Hydrochloride Tablets)
Wet coughs are generally caused by respiratory infections. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that has a stronger effect on bacteria such as mycoplasma, chlamydia, and rickettsia.
Be cautious not to give your dog human medications like antibiotics or cold remedies without consulting a vet. While these drugs may be effective for humans, dogs have different body structures, and the same treatment may not yield the same results. Some human medications can even lead to poisoning in dogs, causing severe consequences!
Lastly, frequent coughing in some dogs may be related to heart conditions, nasal stenosis, tracheal collapse, or other diseases. Dogs with obesity, senior dogs, and certain breeds, such as Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Bichon Frises, should seek veterinary care promptly if they exhibit symptoms like frequent coughing, inspiratory stridor, and reluctance to move.
