When the tear ducts become blocked, whether due to infection or other causes, the tear ducts are unable to function properly, leading to tears not being able to drain from the tear ducts. As a result, tears naturally overflow, creating unsightly tear stains. It's essential to avoid feeding your cat an excessive amount of highfat and highprotein foods in daily meals.

Excessively salty food can trigger excessive tearing. An intake of too much salt can increase the secretion of tears from the cat's tear glands, leading to the cat's eyes watering. It's important to feed your cat a light diet, minimizing the consumption of processed foods high in artificial additives, such as snacks, canned food, and ham. Opt for lowsodium cat food with a balanced ratio of fruits and vegetables to reduce irritation.

Eye inflammation can also cause excessive tearing. If a cat's eyes are infected, they may frequently rub their eyes with their paws, introducing dirt and bacteria into the eyes, which can lead to further infection.

Entropion, where the eyelashes grow abnormally inward, is a congenital condition. If this condition becomes severe and irritates the eyes, it can cause the cat to tear up. In such cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the issue.

In some cat breeds, such as the shortnosed Persian cats, the tear ducts are naturally narrow, which can lead to a lifelong condition. Regular cleaning is required to maintain hygiene in these cases.
