Types of Dog Parasites: A Comprehensive Guide

Common internal parasites in dogs include hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms, among others. Hookworms can directly penetrate the skin to infect a dog, leading to severe itching, anemia, diarrhea, and other symptoms. In severe cases, pets may exhibit mucous and bloody stools with a foul, tarlike odor, ultimately succumbing to extreme exhaustion.

Roundworms are particularly prevalent in puppies, with nearly 100% of them being born with them. Besides these common parasites, there's also heartworm, a dangerous internal parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. Ticks possess sharp mouthparts with barbs, making them difficult to remove once they've inserted into the skin. Even if you pull them out forcibly, the mouthparts may remain, leading to local redness, inflammation, and even ulcers. Mites, when overpopulated, can block and rupture hair follicles, disrupting normal follicle metabolism and cleaning, resulting in clinical skin issues like hair loss and redness.

Additionally, these parasites often lead to secondary bacterial and yeast infections, causing more severe skin diseases. Symptoms may include discharge, scabbing, and intense itching.
