Part 1: Two Common Methods for Dog Tail Docking

1. Surgical Scissor Method:

This method typically requires a visit to a professional veterinary clinic. First, the surgical area must be thoroughly cleaned with alcohol or iodine solution. Then, using sterilized hemostats, the veterinarian will clamp the dog's tail, and swiftly cut off the excess tail with a surgical blade. Afterward, apply a hemostatic powder to the tail's severed end, and keep the hemostats in place for about 15 minutes until the bleeding stops. Dog tail docking should ideally be done as early as possible. Puppies have tender tails and undeveloped nerves at this stage, making the procedure less risky and less painful without the need for anesthesia. However, the optimal time for docking can vary slightly among different breeds.

For instance, Poodles are usually docked around 3 days old, while Shih Tzus can be docked between 12 weeks of age. Most other puppies are typically docked around 7 days old.

Once a puppy is over one month old, it is not advisable to use the cotton thread or air valve method, as the tail's nerves are fully developed by this time, and the procedure can cause severe pain.
