Understanding the Common Causes of a White Turtle Shell

1. Shell Moulting: Turtle shedding, or moulting, is a natural process that occurs as turtles grow. As they continue to expand, their existing shells can no longer accommodate their larger size. Consequently, they must shed their old scales and grow into larger ones. Typically, this happens when a turtle grows an additional 0.15mm, and the shed skin often appears translucent and white.

2. Shell Rot Disease: Shell rot is a common ailment in turtles, often caused by poor water quality in their habitat. Neglecting to regularly change the water can lead to bacterial growth, which can manifest as white spots on the turtle's shell in the early stages of the disease. These spots may then turn red as the condition worsens.

3. Alkaline Water or Calcium Deficiency: If the water in the turtle's tank has a pH level above 7, it can result in the formation of alkaline deposits that cover the shell, resembling a rough, white plastic layer. This can make the turtle's shell appear white. Additionally, if the turtle's shell looks hazy and white, it might indicate a calcium deficiency following a moult.

What to Do About a White Turtle Shell

In cases where the white shell is due to shedding, it's crucial for the keeper to maintain a clean and hygienic environment for the turtle, particularly ensuring the water quality remains pristine to prevent bacterial infections during the shedding process. It's also important not to attempt to manually remove the shed skin, as this can harm the turtle.

If the turtle is suffering from shell rot, the turtle should be isolated and dried, and the affected areas should be treated with penicillin ointment or other antiseptic creams. Generally, drying the turtle and applying the medication for a few days can lead to a cure.

In instances where the water quality is to blame for the white shell, the keeper should promptly change the water in the tank to prevent the pH from becoming too alkaline. If the issue is due to calcium deficiency, increasing the turtle's exposure to sunlight and supplementing with vitamin D3 can aid in restoring the turtle's health.
