One: At What Age Do Rabbits Reach Sexual Maturity?

Due to variations in breed, nutritional status, gender, genetic factors, and individual development, the age of sexual maturity in rabbits can vary significantly.

On average, male rabbits reach sexual maturity between 4 to 4.5 months of age, while female rabbits typically mature between 3.5 to 4 months.

However, it is generally not recommended to breed rabbits immediately after they reach sexual maturity. Although they are capable of reproducing at this point, their body organs are still developing. Early breeding can hinder their own growth and also affect the health of their offspring. This may lead to low pregnancy rates, fewer offspring, poor development of newborns, and higher mortality rates.

Two: When Can Rabbits Be Bred?

Based on past production practices, the most suitable breeding age for rabbits is typically 1.2 to 5 months after their first estrus. Additionally, the rabbit's weight should reach 70% to 75% of the standard adult weight for their breed. Meeting these conditions ensures the health of the female rabbit and can increase the number and survival rate of the offspring.

Generally, small breeds can be bred at 4 to 5 months, medium breeds at 5 to 6 months, and large breeds at 7 to 8 months. It is also important to note that the breeding time for male rabbits should be one month later than that for female rabbits. Breeding rabbits too early or too late can both affect the reproductive functions and fertility of the rabbits.

On average, male rabbits can breed for 3 to 4 years, and female rabbits for 2 to 3 years if bred at the appropriate age. However, if rabbits are bred too early or if the owner engages in highintensity breeding practices, the female rabbit's breeding period may be reduced to only 1 to 2 years. If breeding continues beyond this time, the female rabbit's pregnancy rate will decrease sharply, the mortality rate of embryos will increase significantly, and the vitality of the offspring will be reduced. The sperm vitality of older rabbits is poor, and the quality of the offspring will naturally decline. If both the male and female rabbits are elderly, the mortality rate of embryos can reach about 30%.

Three: When is the Best Breeding Season for Rabbits?

The best breeding season for rabbits is spring, from March to May. During this period, the estrus rate of female rabbits is over 80%, the pregnancy rate is 85% to 90%, and the number of offspring per litter can reach 7 to 8.

When breeding rabbits in spring, it is advisable to choose the time from 8 to 11 a.m. or during the weaker afternoon sun. This is because rabbits are more active during these times, which can increase the pregnancy rate of female rabbits.

Additionally, it is important to schedule breeding times around feeding times. Approximately 15 to 20 days before planned breeding, male rabbits should be given an increased protein intake, along with additional vitamins and minerals, and should engage in more exercise to strengthen their bodies and improve the quality of the offspring.
