What Are the Symptoms of Turtle Pneumonia?

Turtle pneumonia often occurs due to temperature fluctuations, particularly during the spring and autumn seasons. The condition can be divided into three stages:

Initial Stage: Turtle pneumonia typically originates from a cold, leading to symptoms such as runny nose, decreased energy, and slower movement. Observant owners may also notice white mucus in the turtle's mouth and a tendency to float horizontally in the water. Additionally, land turtles may become excessively thirsty.

Middle Stage: As the illness progresses, turtles may experience a loss of appetite or reduced food intake. Breathing becomes more rapid, especially when swimming in their enclosure, and this can be easily observed by the owner.

Advanced Stage: In this stage, turtles may struggle with breathing due to nasal mucus blocking the nostrils, or they may emit cries resembling a crying baby. When placed in the water, they may float on their sides and have difficulty lifting their heads, as they lack the strength to do so.

How to Treat Turtle Pneumonia?

1. Isolation and Heating: Upon discovering pneumonia in a turtle, it should be immediately isolated from others and the water in its enclosure should be replaced. If possible, the area should be disinfected to prevent the spread to other turtles. The water should be heated or the turtle placed in a shallow area to bask in the sun, as these measures can significantly alleviate symptoms. Typically, turtles begin to improve within a week.

2. Medication: In the early stages, owners can administer gentamicin and normal saline injections into the turtle's legs. For more severe cases, medications like azithromycin or amoxicillin can be used for water immersion therapy. The dosage is 0.5g of medication per 500ml of water, with the treatment administered once daily.

It is crucial to maintain a stable environment and water temperature of around 28°C during treatment to prevent any significant temperature fluctuations, which can worsen the turtle's condition.
