This condition is a contagious infection, affecting both humans and animals, with young, elderly, thin, and immunocompromised individuals being more susceptible. The most typical symptoms include hair loss and circular scaly spots; however, some cases may present without hair loss or dandruff, but with local bumps, pustules, or raised red patches or nodules that resemble hair loss. Due to the diversity of its lesions, it can easily be confused with other skin diseases.

Dogs may resort to biting and scratching excessively, which can be quite itchy and distressing to watch. Diagnosis primarily relies on microscopic examination for fungal spores, Wood's lamp examination, or fungal culture. Treatment for skin fungal infections generally involves both topical applications and systemic medications.

Your veterinarian may suggest injections or a medicated bath, which can be an appropriate course of action. While injections can have significant side effects and are not recommended, a medicated bath is an option. However, it's important to note that medicated baths should not be performed daily; topical treatments are still necessary.

Using iodine solution for daily washing is a good practice; purchase a large supply. Iodine is a valuable resource, and its antiseptic properties are enhanced when mixed with alcohol. After applying the iodine, consider using a Petefen spray, which is effective against fungi. For persistent cases, you can sprinkle a small amount of powdered cefalexin capsules (a human antibiotic) before applying Petefen. After spraying, gently dry the area with a hairdryer to facilitate absorption. For less severe cases, this method typically resolves the issue within a week. For more severe cases, follow this regimen for about two weeks. Remember to fit your dog with a muzzle to prevent them from licking the treated area.
