Section 1: Symptoms and Common Causes of Diarrhea in Parrots

The primary symptom of parrot diarrhea is, of course, an abnormal state of feces. In mild cases, the feces may simply contain more moisture without any other notable changes. However, in severe cases, the parrot may start to pass watery stools, with the feces exhibiting unusual colors. This is often accompanied by increased water intake, decreased appetite, and a general lack of energy.

Severely affected parrots may tuck their heads under their wings and keep their eyes halfclosed. Their feathers, particularly those on the wings, may begin to droop.

The reasons for diarrhea in Eclectus parrots typically include:

Parrots catching a cold during winter or in environments with significant temperature fluctuations;

Sudden overeating of fruits, vegetables, or other highmoisture foods, or feeding too watery food to young parrots;

Inadequate storage of parrot feed, leading to mold and spoilage;

Drinking unclean water;

Longterm use of unclean feeding or drinking cups, which can harbor bacteria due to food spoilage;

Infections from organisms like Mycoplasma and Chlamydia, which can also cause respiratory abnormalities in addition to diarrhea.

Section 2: Treatment for Diarrhea in Eclectus Parrots

When a parrot experiences diarrhea, it's important not to panic. If the symptoms are mild, the owner can initially administer some garlic water to help improve the parrot's constitution and alleviate the diarrhea. Remember to change the garlic water daily to prevent spoilage.

If garlic water does not provide relief, the owner can treat the diarrhea with tetracycline or doxycycline. Administer 1/5 to 1/4 of a tetracycline tablet, ground into a powder and mixed with water in a cup or bowl. Parrots usually recover quickly after consuming this. Note that garlic water and medication should not be taken simultaneously, and the dosage should not be excessive, as weak parrots may not withstand strong medication and could potentially die.

The diet of Eclectus parrots can remain the same, consisting of grains, millet, and the like. Temporarily avoid feeding fruits and vegetables. If the parrot refuses to eat, to prevent dehydration, the owner should offer some glucose.

This concludes the information on what to do when an Eclectus parrot has diarrhea. If home treatment is ineffective, and if possible, it's advisable to take the parrot to a veterinary clinic for examination to determine if the symptoms are due to a viral infection.
