Section 1: Common Symptoms of Rabbit Coccidiosis

1. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a very prominent sign of rabbit coccidiosis. When rabbits are affected by this disease, they will experience frequent diarrhea. If this condition is not addressed promptly, it can severely compromise their health and, in extreme cases, lead to death.

2. Loss of Appetite

Rabbits with coccidiosis often exhibit a decrease in appetite. This reduction in food intake, coupled with diarrhea, can quickly lead to dehydration and weakness. It is essential to supplement the diet of affected rabbits with glucose and electrolytes to help them recover.

3. Unusual Body Odor

Rabbits typically do not have a strong odor. However, if they develop coccidiosis, their bodies may emit a foul smell. This distinctive odor is different from what they normally have, and it should prompt owners to consider the possibility of the disease.

4. Screaming

Rabbits with coccidiosis may scream, which is unusual for them. This screaming is often a sign of discomfort in the abdomen, and the louder the scream, the more painful the abdomen is likely to be.

5. Lethargy

Infected rabbits often prefer to stay in their cages and rest, as diarrhea can drain their energy, leading to weakness. If you notice your rabbit lying listlessly in its cage, it's a sign to take immediate action, as this behavior is not normal and requires attention.

6. Treating Rabbit Coccidiosis

Prevention is key in managing coccidiosis in rabbits. While the medications used for treatment and prevention are similar, they must be administered consistently over a long period. Common treatments include:

Quinococcide Powder: Mix 1015 grams per 100 kilograms of feed.

Clormequat: Administer 30mg per kilogram of body weight orally.

Rabbit Coccidiostat: Give 50mg per kilogram of body weight to the sick rabbit, once daily.

Sulfadimethoxine: Administer 200mg per kilogram of body weight in a solution, once daily until the rabbit recovers completely.

Remember, coccidiosis prevention medications are essentially the same as treatment medications. Do not assume that rabbits will recover without medication. Delaying treatment can lead to worsening health and, ultimately, death.

7. Preventing Rabbit Coccidiosis

Rabbits are prone to coccidiosis, so it's crucial to feed them a coccidiostatenriched diet or add anticoccidial drugs to their feed. Prevention medications are similar to treatment drugs, but with lower doses. It's important to note that sulfadimethoxine should not be used for prevention due to its significant side effects; it is only suitable for treatment.

Tip from Oxygen Pet Doctor: Early detection and treatment of coccidiosis are vital for the survival of rabbits. Young rabbits, with lower resistance, are at a higher risk of death from coccidiosis.
