1. In hamsters, the distance between the anus and the reproductive organs is notably closer in females, whereas in males, this distance is greater. If the reproductive organs are close together and there's a noticeable flesh seam, you're likely dealing with a female hamster. Adult male hamsters, such as those of the Russian or Syrian varieties, will have prominent testicles, which are more pronounced in species like the dwarf hamster or gerbil. However, in the Chinese hamster, these may not be as noticeable. For younger hamsters, the presence or absence of fur between the reproductive organs and the anus can also help distinguish between genders: males will have fur, while females will be hairless.

2. During the first 5 to 17 days of life, hamsters can be sexed by their nipples. Female hamsters will have visible nipples, while males will not. On the left side of the hamster's body, near the middle of the abdomen, there's a small, bellybuttonlike structure known as the scent gland, which is a distinctive feature of male hamsters and not found in females. This gland secretes a substance that needs regular cleaning to prevent a strong odor and potential health issues.

3. Typically, male hamsters have larger, reddish buttocks that may appear swollen, while female hamsters have a more inverted triangular buttocks shape, with a narrow and slightly closed anus, and sometimes a visible rounded area. Generally, male hamsters are larger than females. However, if a female's diet is significantly better, she might become more overweight than the male.

4. Male hamsters are generally more docile and less likely to bite. Some female hamsters, however, can be quite aggressive, especially during pregnancy, when they may become extremely irritable and potentially attack males if kept together. Despite this, female hamsters tend to have shorter fur, making them easier to groom. In contrast, male hamsters, particularly golden hamsters, have longer fur that can be more challenging to maintain.

Understanding the sex of your hamster can guide you in choosing the right pet for your preferences. If you're looking for a more gentle companion, a male hamster might be the better choice, especially for beginners.
