Why are dogs more prone to skin issues during the summer months?
1. The soaring temperatures and intense UV radiation during summer can be quite challenging. Some pet owners, with the best intentions, might think that shaving their dog's fur will help keep them cooler.
However, this is a misconception. Dogs' fur serves as a protective barrier, not just for keeping them warm in winter but also for providing insulation in the summer. If you shave your dog completely, their skin is left exposed to the sun, which can lead to sunburn and, subsequently, skin diseases.
2. The high humidity and heat of summer create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Without the fur to act as a shield, a shaved dog's skin is more susceptible to direct contact with bacteria. This increases the risk of transmission when they are in public places.
3. Some pet owners believe that frequent bathing will help cool down their dogs and wash away all the bacteria. But dogs have a natural protective layer of sebum on their skin, which offers some defense. Overbathing can strip this protective layer, and since dogs' skin is quite delicate, it can lead to irritation and, ultimately, skin diseases.
4. The hot weather can also lead to a decrease in appetite, causing dogs to absorb less nutrition. This deficiency can weaken their immune system, making them more susceptible to skin issues.
It's often the case that wellintentioned actions by pet owners can inadvertently harm their pets. What was meant to help can actually make dogs more vulnerable to skin problems.
