When a cat arrives in a new environment, it faces a daunting challenge: the sudden loss of its mother and the siblings it grew up with. Everything around it is unfamiliar, without the comforting presence of its mother, the warmth of its siblings, or the familiar surroundings it once knew. Frightened, anxious, and tense, the cat may experience a whirlwind of emotions. Questions may race through its mind: Will these people hurt me? Where am I? Are there bad guys who might bully me? Hiding away is a perfectly natural response. If a cat seems at ease and playful in a new place, that would be the unusual case.

So, when you bring a new cat into your home and it exhibits these symptoms, please don't worry or get anxious. Everything takes time. Anxiety in cats typically lasts for two to three days, and adult cats might take a bit longer to adjust.

But how can you help your new feline friend improve its state and reduce anxiety, becoming your best friend in the shortest possible time?

1. Gentle Petting

As soon as you bring your cat home, before it has a chance to scurry under the sofa, gently pick it up and stroke its underbelly. This is a surefire way to win a cat's favor, as they love being touched there.

2. Communication and Praise

Cats are shy, sensitive, and suspicious creatures. They are adept at reading human emotions. If you communicate with them in a gentle, affectionate tone and with a soothing expression, they will feel at ease and begin to trust you. Once they feel secure, they are more likely to accept you. Conversely, if you scowl or appear menacing, no matter how well you treat them, they will be terrified and will seek to distance themselves. To become true friends, it may be a long shot. Therefore, when your new cat arrives, always speak to it with a kind smile, offer praise, and avoid criticism. Choose a gentle, pleasant name for it. And remember, when calling its name, do so in a warm and affectionate manner, never in a commanding tone.

3. Playtime Together

Before bringing your cat home, prepare a cat toy, like a feather wand. Cats adore these toys, and many of our clients give one to their pets before they leave. Spend time playing with your cat; once it's happy, it will forget about the new environment. With joy in its heart, it will soon consider you a friend.

4. Bring Home Familiar Items

Take some of the cat's used litter and, if possible, the litter box as well. The litter box is a cat's sanctuary, and having a familiar litter box and litter can provide a sense of security, making the cat feel like its territory is still intact. This helps it acclimate to the new environment and reduces the chances of it urinating outside.

Security is crucial for cats. They are shy, sensitive, and suspicious creatures. Without a sense of security, their immune systems can weaken, leading to illness. Therefore, it is essential to treat your new cat with kindness and patience. This not only lays the foundation for their future in your home but also for the bond you will share and their overall wellbeing.
