When a cat's dermatitis leads to a rotten tail, there's no time to waste! Delaying treatment can lead to more severe infections. It's crucial for pet parents to take their feline to a veterinary clinic immediately. There, the vet will clean and disinfect the affected area using iodine or alcohol. If there's necrotic tissue on the skin, it will be surgically removed with a sterile scalpel, followed by stitching, inflammation control, and bandaging. Cats with more severe inflammation may require oral or injectable antiinflammatory medications to manage the condition promptly.

Should you be unable to seek veterinary care and the tail rot is not severe, consider the following steps for athome treatment:

1. Debridement and Disinfection

◮ Handling the wound can be painful for the cat, so to prevent挣扎 or injury, it's advisable to wrap the cat in a towel, with one person holding it steady and another gently attending to the tail.

First, trim the fur around the cat's tail to expose the infected skin fully.

Next, rinse the wound with hydrogen peroxide, using tweezers to gently wipe away any thick脓液 and, if present, gently squeeze out any boils.

Finally, rinse off the hydrogen peroxide with saline solution and apply iodine evenly to disinfect the area.

2. Topical Treatment

● Apply a layer of Fusant (zinc oxide ointment) to the skin, which has astringent, moisturizing, and antiinflammatory properties. Repeat this every 2 to 3 times daily.

● Always disinfect the area with iodine before applying the ointment, and if there's pus, use hydrogen peroxide for disinfection.

● For larger areas of rot, use sterile gauze to bandage the wound, ensuring it's not too tight to avoid impeding circulation. Once the wound starts to scab, you can stop bandaging to allow for better ventilation and healing.

3. Oral Antibiotics

Administer Esudan (cefaclor tablets) for inflammation, once daily, and continue for 2 to 3 days after the wound starts to scab.

4. Daily Care

● Fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar to prevent it from licking or biting its tail, which could worsen the skin breakdown.

● Maintain a clean environment, regularly wash the cat's bed, and expose it to sunlight.

5. Regular Deworming

Cat dermatitis can be caused by fungi, bacteria, or mites. During treatment, ensure regular deworming. For mite infections, use deworming medications containing selamectin, dipterex (pyriproxyfen moxidectin drops), and other ingredients.

6. Regular Inspections

After the scab forms, if the cat's skin shows dandruff, use a Wood's lamp to check for fungal infections. If fungal infections are detected, use lomefloxacin spray or ketoconazole cream.

Important Note: If the tail rot is due to male cat's syringoma (greasy tail syndrome), which is often related to hormonal issues in male cats and may recur later, it's recommended to have the cat neutered. Maintain a light diet and a clean living environment as well.
