Effective Dog Mange Treatments: Medications & Remedies
Steps to Remove Fleas from Your Dog
1. Remove Excess Fur and Clear Obstructions
Before tackling the fleas, it's essential to start by removing the affected fur and any obstructions. Fleas can hide within the hair, continuing to infect healthy skin. Always wear gloves and disinfect the grooming scissors with antiseptic solution before gently removing the fur. If the infection is widespread or if the puppy is very young, it's advisable to shave the area completely.
2. Apply or Spray Medication on the Affected Areas
Once the fur is removed, treat the affected areas with medication. Depending on the severity of the fleas, you can either apply the medication with a brush or spray it directly onto the skin. Aim to apply the spray 2 to 3 times, adjusting the amount based on the severity of the infestation. After applying the medication, immediately fit your dog with an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from licking the area and potentially ingesting the medication or interfering with its effectiveness. Remember to continue using the collar and medication until your dog is fully recovered to prevent recurrence.
3. Clean and Disinfect to Eliminate Remaining Fleas
Fleas often thrive in unsanitary environments. If your pet has fleas, it's crucial to clean and disinfect your home. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove most of the dust, loose fur, and fleas from your home. Follow up with a thorough disinfection using a suitable disinfectant. Aim to clean and disinfect your home once a week, with 3 to 4 sessions per month.
4. Provide Nutritional Support and Sunlight for Recovery
A wellnourished dog has a stronger immune system, which can speed up recovery. Ensure your dog receives a balanced diet, primarily consisting of highquality dog food, supplemented with nutritional supplements, fruits, and soups. During the healing process, allow your dog to enjoy sunlight, as natural light can greatly aid in recovery.
