Part 1: How to Measure Your Cat's Temperature When They Have a Cold and Fever

Determining if your cat has a fever requires understanding their normal body temperature. Typically, a healthy cat's temperature ranges between 38 and 39.5 degrees Celsius. However, kittens may have slightly higher temperatures. If your cat's temperature exceeds 39.5 degrees Celsius, it's considered a fever, and over 40 degrees Celsius is a severe fever.

There are two common methods for measuring your cat's temperature: rectal and external. Both methods require the use of a standard mercury thermometer. Rectal measurements are more accurate with less error. To perform a rectal temperature check, you'll need to apply a small amount of lubricant to the thermometer's tip, gently insert it about two centimeters into your cat's anus, and slightly angle it to touch the rectal wall. Wait for two to three minutes before removing the thermometer, wiping it clean, and checking the temperature. For an external measurement, simply hold your cat and place the thermometer between their hind leg and belly, waiting for six to seven minutes before checking the temperature.

Firstly, it's advisable to assist your cat in lowering their fever manually by wiping their paw pads and belly with alcohol or using a cold compress. If their temperature does not decrease significantly, it's recommended to use petspecific feverreducing medication, rather than human medications. If your cat's fever persists despite medication, it's crucial to take them to a veterinarian for further treatment, which may include injections.
